Every four years or so, you deserve a milestone. Think about it: high school lasts for four years. So does college (well...for most of us). Every four years we pick a new person to run the whole country (Don't forget to vote!). Four year turning points can be sad, or bittersweet, but now that Foam is four years old, all of us here felt it was really important that we marked this milestone with a celebration.

That celebration is this issue of Foam, our twenty-fourth. The theme of this issue is THE NEW, and you no doubt already noticed that we've taken that to heart, with a bold new look.

That said, just because you enter into the new, you can't discard the old. When you get to college you still need all that stuff you learned in high school, and when you get out of college, that freshman seminar in English lit will probably prove surprisingly useful in a career. So, we might look fresh and different (for which I thank Tom Adler and Kristi Nystul, and a whole slew of super-talented photographers, stylists, make-up artists, and so many more) but we're not turning our back on the things we really care about: fashion, sure, but also the latest in music and books, intriguing films and artists, inspiring personalities, and of course, the ocean, surf, sport, and feeling (and doing) good.

I can't imagine a more perfect embodiment of this blend of new and old, passion and style, than our gorgeous cover girl Amber Tamblyn. First off, she's one of the most sought-after young starlets working today, the very face of the new Hollywood. But at the same time, her timeless beauty makes you think of old Hollywood, in its studio heyday. And not many movie stars also publish collections of poetry.

In every aspect of every story inside, we thought about our theme, THE NEW. You'll find the newest fall fashions (literally hundreds of them), some of the season's most fascinating reads, and we even peered into our crystal ball to introduce you to four people who we just know are one day going to be the surf world's old guard.

OK, I'll stop now. Enjoy!

Kristina

PS I know I said I'd stop but I just can't without thanking Jill Klein, Skye McRae, and Ali Williams, who helped make this milestone issue possible. And I'm dying to know what you think about our new look... drop me a line at editor@foammagazine.com
