EVENT: VANS CUSTOM CULTURE CONTEST
Hey Art Kids, this one is for you. Vans is searching for talented high school art classes to compete in a sneaker customization contest that could take you to a national level of competition in Los Angeles.
Vans will accept ten entries from each state, narrowing down winners regionally to compete during an all-expenses paid trip to LA, which includes a Welcome BBQ and a tour of the Vans headquarters in Orange County. The winning school gets a killer prize package too: gift packs, tickets to the Vans Warped Tour, and a $10,00 donation to its art program. Registration starts March 1, 2010.

OLYMPIC GAMES 2010: ATHLETES TO WATCH
Now that the Winter Olympic Games are in full swing in Vancouver, read up on some Foam favorites for snowboarding in our December/ January Digital Edition.

The rules and regulations to qualify for a chance to strike gold in snowboarding at the 2010 Olympics are so convoluted and downright confusing, we’ll spare you the exhaustive logistics. Instead, we’re hedging our bets and giving you the shortlist of which female snowboarders we expect to see in Vancouver this winter.
Hailing from all over the globe, the following riders are well-rounded, dynamic, and incredibly skilled athletes whose achievements are only matched by their aspirations and drive to pursue even greater goals. We feel lucky to be able to portray sides of them you’ve probably never seen before- off the pipe, stripped of their usual uniforms and gear. And though the images speak for themselves, we’ll say it here: these gals are gorgeous.
It’s anyone’s call in Vancouver, but one thing’s for certain: these women have given snowboarding a newfound substance and style that makes it all the more thrilling to see what they’ll pull off next. Read more…..

Acouple of months back, I had a long talk with Damian Kulash of OK Go. He’s long winded, as you can see from this open letter to fans he posted on the band’s web site the other day. There’s a whole roundup of the situation on Rolling Stone on Monday, but the basic irony is that OK Go, a band who built its fan base on viral infection of a few dorky-fun clips, is no longer legally allowed to encourage embedding of its videos. They’re doing it anyway, of course, with this new one for “This Too Shall Pass” from their excellent new album Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, which Kulash and I discussed at length. It involves a marching band emerging from a field, Creepshow-style, and features a whole different version of the song than the one on the album. Since then, I’ve heard there’s another plan for a clip where Kulash gets thrown across a room with a slingshot which is further support for my theory that this guy’s life is like a cross between Jackass and Nova, but hey, that’s how he wants it, I guess.

INSIDER: PAIGE MYCOSKIE
For most surfers, a transition from riding boards to board meetings would mean a broken spirit. But for Paige Mycoskie, entering the business world just meant “embarking on another adventure.”
It’s that fearlessness and optimism that helped the surfer girl create Aviator Nation, a vintage inspired line of tees, sweats, hats and hoodies that don’t just look retro- they are retro.
Paige, who originally hails from Texas, is a vintage tee connoisseur, so simply imitating her huge authentic collection wasn’t going to cut it. For a year and a half, Paige soaked her tees and hats in dye in her apartment, stirring them with a big wooden spoon. She painstakingly sewed her own drop tags in each piece, ground patches on her hats to make them look authentic.
By studying how tees were made back in the day, right down to the machines used to make the fabric and the dyes used for color, Paige eventually replicated a vintage production line right in her Los Angeles plant that’s now used to make all the pieces in her collection.
“My passion is to make stuff that looks just like authentic vintage and being such a tough critic helps me to do that pretty well I think,” she said. “It’s all about the details for me.”
And the difference hasn’t gone unnoticed. Aviator Nation has been featured in publications like In Touch, People and WWD magazine. Even Andy Samberg is a fan! But even though her business is growing rapidly, meaning less time for surfing, Paige hasn’t lost her energetic, high-spirited ways.
“It’s definitely a hard transition waking up with a Blackberry in my hand rather than putting on my bikini to go catch some morning waves, but I can’t complain because I love my company.”’
Paige is just spreading the stoke in her own way. When someone buys a piece from her line and loves it, it all seems worth the lifestyle change.
“When I see someone this excited about something I created, it gives me a feeling inside that’s pretty stellar.”
