TOWARD THE GREAT EXPANSE

Montanaro Gallery will host Toward the Great Expanse with an Opening Reception on Saturday, April 12, 2008, from 5- 9pm, in their new gallery located at 18 Franklin Street in Newport, Rhode Island. The show will feature the visual works of two artists, Julie Goldstein and Ty Williams. Both artists will be in attendance.

Julie Goldstein’s works will include pieces on paper, fabric, wood, and canvas, created using multiple techniques including woodblock printmaking, drawing, and painting. Her large scale, hand burnished woodcut prints are a sharp contrast to her found fabrics and traditional sewing mixed media works. Her latest series employs personal storytelling and explores gender roles of women in contemporary society, along with other varied subject matter, including surfing. Inspired by fearless women that she observed in Central America, this work focuses on empowerment, protection, independence, and motherhood, with a bit of humor.

“Bring your sunglasses” is what Ty Williams warned about his newest body of work. Ty’s created his latest series using bright colors inspired from places he’s lived-the Caribbean up to his current home in Maine. Ty’s site specific paintings are mostly painted onto wood surfaces and incorporate his signature detailed style. Drawing from a childhood influence, Dr. Seuss, Ty’s new, whimsical works include such varied subject matter as animals, fish, people, and cityscapes. These works are both meant to make you think, or simply smile. He often works an abstracted first layer, followed with a strong illustrative line finish. “It’s 80s music video meets New England,” claims Ty.

Toward the Great Expanse will be on display at Montanaro Gallery until May 25th. All works included in this exhibition will be available for purchase on our website beginning April 15th.
